Who needs an expensive water park when you can watch your kids out the kitchen window while you make dinner in the comfort of your own air conditioned house? It was so hot and sunny I didn't want them to BAKE in the sun so I put the easy-up over the pool. It worked great! They stayed out there for hours! Their little fingers and toes looked like raisins when they finally came in.
We played with playdough. Kayla wanted to make a hamburger so we all helped and make a Happy Meal complete with ranch for your fries, curly fries, ketchup and ice cream for dessert. The kids always go through my kitchen "tool" drawer for playdough toys. The hamburger bun top was made with the meat cleaver, the fries from the garlic press, and the ice cream from my cookie scoop. GOOD TIMES!!!
This is Brinley's new favorite thing to do. When I'm in the kitchen making dinner or baking or whatever she comes in and says, "Mommy, play cups??" So I get the stool, put out a dish towel, give her 3 or 4 cups a couple of measuring cups and spoons and put about 1 inch of water in each one. She has a blast and will play for an hour.
This is the best we could do. These were taken after 2 hours at the parade and 2 more hours walking around Old Town Spring and a hour nap for Brin and 1 hour nap for me. Lars didn't get a nap - he just looks tired! I've tried to be nonchalant about the heat here in Houston with a good attitude but let's be honest... We've never sweat this much in our lives!!! It's so sticky!! It's bearable but only in the air conditioned house or the air conditioned store or the air conditioned car. My first 2 Sundays teaching Gospel Doctrine the A/C wasn't working in the gym! After my lesson a woman came up to me and said, "Oh, that was great." As she spoke she touched my back and said, "Oh, you poor thing, you're all wet!" As if I didn't already know that!!! She was just visiting so I probably won't ever see her again. (until her next grandkid is baptized) Anyway it's fixed now so now just sweat from nervousness.
The funniest floats were the ones sponsored by the local churches that had their rock bands playing. I couldn't understand why everyone wasn't just bustin' a gut laughing at this - oh wait... this is NORMAL here! The kids have decided they want to be in the parade next year. I told them maybe the church would sponsor a float. They have some grand ideas of what that would be like... The missionaries can ride their bikes and hand out pass-a-long cards, the kids can decorate their bikes and hide them, we could just drive our car but they really want to ride on a float too... Silly kids!!
On the way home we stopped by Old Town Spring. We drive through it all the time and Kayla has been dying to see what The Doll Hospital is. Basically it's a really expensive doll shop and they also repair dolls there too. Not an ideal place for a 2 yr old who wants to "hug the babies" and 2 boys that could care less if the dolls faces are porcelain. We had lunch at a place called Ellen's Cafe and stopped for some lemonade at the sweet shop. It was great!!
This is the place in Old Town Spring that did the fireworks we watched on Saturday night. It was alot of fun!!
Brinley hasn't fully developed her love for fireworks like the rest of the kids. She sat on my lap and when the fireworks went off she would lay down and pretend not to look at them but she would watch them our of the corner of her eye.
They set off these lantern things that just go way up in the sky and and float until the fire burns out. Have you seen how many trees are in Houston - I'm thinking that maybe this isn't' the best idea. Especially when one gets stuck in the tree!! Thankfully it's too wet here for the trees to burn. Tender Mercies!!
We had a barbecue on Sunday and made a yummy flag cake and did some fireworks. Our neighbors put on quite a show that we enjoyed. Apparently there aren't any firework restrictions here and everything is legal!! That makes for some really good neighborhood displays!
